They want to control their parents, their siblings, their friends, and even people they don’t know. They have their own agenda and want everyone else to know what it is and how to fit into it. Leaders can be a real blessing in life but they sure are hard to raise. One of the greatest gifts you can give to your budding leader is the ability to follow. To follow means listening to the needs and desires of others, submitting to someone else's agenda, and learning how to work cooperatively on a team. All good leaders need to know how and when to follow.Although you will nurture the leadership gifts your child possesses, it's also your job to teach him or her how to work with others. The weaknesses of young leaders are demonstrated in negative ways like arguing, badgering, and being demanding or angry. Don't just brush off these weaknesses as inevitable. Take time to correct, but do it in a way that appreciates the child’s gifts. "Karen, I can tell you're going to be a leader someday, but remember that good leaders need to think about the needs of others." Or, "Jim, I like the way you take initiative with your brother. Remember, though, that a good leader is also a good listener."As you guide the development of your young leader you’ll not only make family life easier now, but also you’ll be equipping him for the future. Your hard work will be worth it in the end.
What are some ways you've been able to direct a budding leader? Click here to tell us about it.This parenting tip comes from the book Home Improvement, The Parenting Book You Can Read to Your Kids by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.
If this tip was sent to you by a friend and you'd like to continue to receive tips yourself, you can sign up at www.biblicalparenting.org.

Back to School

If you are like most, getting into to the routine of a new school year can be a challenge...
Home school...
Getting back into the routine, school work, the phone ringing, the doorbell ringing, and teaching different grade levels. Not to mention the age old question your child is asked "what grade are you in?"
Public or Private school...
New teachers, new administrators, new rules, new friends, it seems the list of changes never end. Not to mention more homework than last year if that is even possible.
This can be a tense time for everyone in the family. To ease some of the schedule changes try making lists on a calendar or chart of who is making lunches, what time events are, who is going to them, where they are, and who is driving.
In the midst of this try to make time for family devotionals whether it is family members taking turns at meal times sharing what God is doing in their lives or turning on your favorite Christian radio station in the car and singing along it will help keep God central in your families busy schedule.
Remember to keep your cool and keep your perspective, you will be in the routine of things before you can blink an eye.

A Practical Way to Teach Values

Here's a practical and effective way to teach values in your family: explain the reasons behind your rules.When you think of rules, you may just think of a list of do's and don'ts that you are trying to impress upon your children. Rules can be much more than that though. They can be used as the vehicle to communicate values to your children. When rules are implemented and used correctly, children will learn not only to say "Excuse me" before interrupting a conversation, but more importantly, they will learn to respect others and see the value of listening to others first before speaking.Ask yourself why you require your five-year-old to stay in the yard or your teenager to check in regularly. These are safety issues and develop a sense of accountability to others.Why do you ask your son to make his bed every day or your daughter to clean and vacuum her room on Saturday? It has to do with the value of neatness and self discipline. Take time to talk about the values, not just the rules. We all have values that we somehow wish our children would develop and take on as their own. As they grow, our children will evaluate our values and choose the ones they understand and can relate to. You have a window of opportunity with your children in which you can teach them the values that you embrace.Rules are values put into action. They show children what values look like, how to put them into practice, and why they are important. If we want our children to embrace our values, we need to teach them what these values are and how to implement them in their lives. Rules become a good vehicle to teach children the things that are most important to us. While you're pondering this idea, consider some of the reasons for the rules God has for his children. It's a good way to connect with the things that are most valuable to God and his family. Psalm 32:7

What do you think about where you hear the word 'soak'? As a single parent you might think of soaking the kid’s play clothes that have so many stains on they will never see clean again. Or your mind might go to that pile of dishes in the sink that have been there for several days. Or if you are a single dad you might think about the oil stains on that new shirt.

For single moms probably the last thing that comes to your mind is soaking in a nice hot tub with bubbles surrounding you. That is a rarity for most single moms. For single dads it might be just standing in the shower soaking up the warmth of the water.

When my kids were younger every once in a while when I thought they were busy with homework, I would try to sneak in a bubble bath just for me. Never happened. They figured out real fast that when I was in the tub I was a captive audience. If I remembered to lock the door, they would lie down on the floor and talk through the crack in the door. On days when I would forget to lock the door, I had to be ready to pull the shower curtain across the tub because if they wanted to talk, they talked. Now that I look back, I’m glad my children felt they could turn to me, their mom, with their problems or just to talk to me about their day and their friends.

I don't want you to think about any of these things. I want you to take a few minutes to think about soaking in the Lord. Have you ever thought about just "soaking" in his Word? Let that sink in for a minute. Take a scripture, could be just a verse or two, find a minute of alone time, grab a cup of coffee or tea and just "soak."

This next week try taking Psalm 32:7 "You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Let the words…
* steep in your mind
* infuse into your heart
* drench your soul
* immerse your entire being

All of these words mean the same as "soak." He wants you to be like little kids who want so much to talk to their parent that they'll lie of the floor and talk through the slit between the door and floor. Or they will barge into the your quiet relaxing time, not caring if they are disturbing anything. They need for the one they love to give them attention and time. God wants the same for you. He is our Heavenly Father who wants us to just "soak" in him.

Special link for homeschool parents

http://www.thehomeschoolchannel.tv/
